Bowood House and Broadleas Garden

Bowood House

Bowood House

Bowood House is a Grade 1 listed Georgian country House begun c1720 with interiors by Robert Adam and a garden designed by Capability Brown. There are superb collections of paintings in the Orangery and of the Lansdowne Marbles in the sculpture gallery. In one of the most beautiful parks in England the sinuous 1km lake was created by the flooding of the unfortunate village of Mannings Hill.

Broadleas gardensBroadleas Garden

Broadleas Garden is an attractive garden with a steep dell planted with many varieties of magnolias and other acid loving plants. There is also a Secret Garden, a sunken Rose Garden and a silver border with a great variety of shrubs and exotic climbers. In a woodland walk some tender rarities can be found sheltered from the elements.

Londinium and the Museum of London

Roman wallLondon is a Roman city. Londinium was founded soon after the Roman invasion in 43AD. The city grew to be one of the largest north of the Alps. It is remarkable how much of the fabric of that first city survives and the walk will begin at Tower Hill with some impressive sections of the Roman city wall.  The blitz revealed the foundations of the Roman fort and nearby is the recently discovered amphitheatre. The walk, which will last around 90 minutes, will end at the Museum of London.

Museum of London

Roman mosaic roomThe Museum of London has displays of Roman artefacts as well as reconstructions of aspects of Roman Life. There are also exhibits from London pre-history to the end of the 17th century. 2010 sees the opening of two new spectacular galleries showing life in London from 1700 to the present day.
